Journey Home

Living life alone, having no one beside you-
To face life’s dangers and still be brave to recover….
Some of us are oblivious to what happens in our country on a regular basis;
Not just in one city or two, but all over the country.
Women face problems in all parts of the country and this is not even based on the fact that one is richer or poorer than the other.
Eve teasing is faced by almost every woman in the country.
Mockery is faced by every woman in some form or the other.
It’s a sad fact that most of the women in our country are looked at with eyes of disdain and contempt, and the government is doing little about it!
From leering to ogling, glaring to whistling women face mockery in some form or the other.
A woman cannot walk safely down a lane in today’s time without having a man turn his head around;
or whistle, stare or pass a comment.
Women have been facing this issue for more than decades.
Yet, as our society progresses with new developments and gadgets people are becoming more and more selfish and think more of themselves.
When can women feel honored as human beings for being just themselves?
Is it only when they get married or when they attain an important job?
Do women own a place in society or do they have to earn it?
How many incidents occur when the man is the victim to some abuse?
Never!
It’s always the woman who is subject to abuse and maltreatment in some manner of the other.
Many people ignore this issue.
It has just become a norm that man is born with Respect and the woman has to earn her own…
Living in a society requires abiding by some norms, having some form of duties towards the society.

If tables were turned around and one of us woke up in a disastrous state, left alone with no one to turn to or learn from, who would be there to help you then? Is getting married or being sheltered under a father’s roof or attaining a job the only way woman can find their journey home to happiness or are there other ways? The society has changed remarkably and women demand more rights in today’s generation, but this journey “home” or to respect is yet to be found.

  1. The journey is of the mind. Equality is a state of mind.

Karina Pandya in Conversation with Co-Founder of the Banyan, Dr. Vandana Gopikumar

An incident of coming across a homeless and mentally ill woman in distress on the road in front of her college in Chennai paved the route for Vandana Gopikumar to establish one of the leading NGOs in the field of mental health – The Banyan. While she was yet a Master’s student of Social Work, Vandana along with a close friend Vaishnavi Jayakumar encountered several other incidents of not being able to find the right shelter and mental institution for a woman in need of medical and psychiatric attention.     The Banyan, which was established in 1993 has been a one-stop destination to not only rescue, and rehabilitate but also treat mentally ill women from low-income groups. Vandana Gopikumar has pioneered a movement, helping thousands of individuals not only reintegrate into society but also secure long-term medical treatment.    Not only is she the co-founder of the NGO – The Banyan, but is also the co-founder of The Banyan Academy of Leadership (BALM). She is also a...

4 Mindfully Spent Days At Woods At Sasan for a Writing Retreat with Bhavna Kher

Writing has been my passion for over 18 years so when I heard about the Writing Retreat that screenwriter, brand consultant and former creative director of Ogilvy - Bhavna Kher was going to conduct I was immediately interested in attending the same.     Not only this but I also wanted to connect with other writers and also sharpen my writing skills as well. It was a perfect opportunity to find inspiration within a focused environment.  Moreover, the 4-day writing retreat, (September 14- September 18th) which was conducted at a luxury boutique resort provided the perfect break from city life, and mindfully focused on sharpening one’s writing skills.  Having our independent quarters, we were surrounded by thickets of trees, within a lush mango orchard on the fringes of the Sasan Gir forest. It was the perfect place to calmly create a story without any disturbances. Moreover, in between the writing exercises, we went for a safari, and eco-trail, and were given besp...
