Back in 1995 - A Tantalising Glimpse

1995 – it could feel like yesterday for some or perhaps a lifetime ago.  Having grown up in the 90s, a lot has changed over the past 21 years.  Its quite hard to grapple over the fact that the times can change so much!  With fragmented memories of 1995, it was the year the Internet actually gained public attention.

It was the year of dial up modems and giant monitors and of course, the inevitable ‘vomit-noise’ that signalled the establishment a successful connection to the ‘World Wide Web’!

Bill Clinton was the president of America at this point of time and Kocheril Raman Narayanan was the Vice President of India with Shankar Dayal Sharma as the President of India. The Prime Minister of India at that time was P.V.Narasimha Rao

Microsoft released Windows 95 and JavaScript was introduced and deployed for the first time. EBay, started as a shopping and online auction website where people were able to buy as well as sell goods and services globally.

The DVD (digital video disc/digital versatile disc) is a digital optical disc storage format that was invented and developed by Philips and Sony in 1995.

It was a device, which could store any kind of digital data and is widely used for software and other computer files as well as video program were watched using DVD players.
DVDs offer higher storage capacity than compact discs, while having the same dimensions.
 What was TV LIKE?

There were very few but popular sitcoms during the 90s and some of them were Saved by the Bell, Full House, X-files and Twin Peaks. Broadcast television in the 90s and especially in 95’ was like the Netflix of today!

Seinfeld was the most popular sitcom, which almost everyone followed and included in their social conversations. In fact, the last episode of Full House had aired after eight seasons!

The Soup Nazi, which is the 116th episode of Seinfeld and with it came the catchphrase ‘No Soup for you’ – applicable for so many of life’s disappointments.

The former football star O.J. Simpson was acquitted for the brutal 1994 double murder of his estranged wife Nicole Brown Simpson and her friend Ronald Goldman on October 3rd, 1995.

Pagers, No Smartphones – but pagers!

These were also known as beepers and were used to message and display alphanumerical messages and/or even announce voice messages. A number would appear on the LCD screen, which would indicate, to you who would be trying to contact you, so that you could be able to call them back.

This was all in America, but what about India?

It was the year the Shiv Sena came to power and Bombay became ‘Mumbai’.
Aditya Chopra’s directorial debut, Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge (DDLJ) was released and it became the longest running Hindi movie.

It was the year India joined the World Trade Organisation and had replaced GATT (General Agreement on Tariff and Trade)

It was also the year when there were reports of the Hindu milk miracle, which surfaced, and the story picked up getting covered by the news services around the world such as the New York Times, the Guardian, CNN and the BBC.

The period of 1995 was a confusing and terrifying time in many ways and there lies many secrets that yet remain uncovered to illuminate the secrets of the mysterious and ancient period of the late 90s; but do you think you can look back at your life and travel back in time?

In 1995Amazon went online & today it's founder Jeff Bezos is the richest man in the world!

Karina Pandya in Conversation with Co-Founder of the Banyan, Dr. Vandana Gopikumar

An incident of coming across a homeless and mentally ill woman in distress on the road in front of her college in Chennai paved the route for Vandana Gopikumar to establish one of the leading NGOs in the field of mental health – The Banyan. While she was yet a Master’s student of Social Work, Vandana along with a close friend Vaishnavi Jayakumar encountered several other incidents of not being able to find the right shelter and mental institution for a woman in need of medical and psychiatric attention.     The Banyan, which was established in 1993 has been a one-stop destination to not only rescue, and rehabilitate but also treat mentally ill women from low-income groups. Vandana Gopikumar has pioneered a movement, helping thousands of individuals not only reintegrate into society but also secure long-term medical treatment.    Not only is she the co-founder of the NGO – The Banyan, but is also the co-founder of The Banyan Academy of Leadership (BALM). NGO Meet Becomes a Fulcrum of Mutual Help

“There is no better way to thank God for your sight than by giving a helping hand to someone in the dark.”  --Helen Keller   There are numerous social causes which would remain otherwise ignored if it were not for the Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs) contributing to the cause. January 6th, Saturday saw the coming together of 25-30 NGOs to provide a single platform for mutual help and support. It was organised by the founder trustee of Karmayog – Vinay Somani to discuss strategic planning for social and civic causes.          A Buffet of Purposes: Maybe You're Lost, Maybe You Aren’t. Maybe You’re Meandering with Meaning     Whether it is raising funds, strategy planning, content writing, or volunteering; there are numerous ways by which people can contribute to the welfare of an NGO.    Dr Dhyanraj Patkar, whose Narmada Kidney Foundation works to create awareness about kidney disease said that 6100 people were on the wait list for a kidney transplant in 2023 in Maharashtra bu

A Boutique Passport to New York

New York, the city that NEVER sleeps is one of the most sought-after hotspots for fashionistas across the world.     With astonishingly tall buildings which rise up to a couple of thousand feet in the air, creating a beautiful New York Skyline, New York is home to some of the most popular brands across the world such as Macy’s, Louis Vuitton, Prada, Burberry, Valentino, Kate Spade, Fendi, Coach, Marc Jacobs, Calvin Klein, Huckberry, Nordstrom NYC and many others there are plenty of innovative retailers and retail trends to choose from. However, New York has not always been the fashion capital of the world.  Paris, Milan and London have always been known worldwide for the most influential fashion trend. New only emerged as a fashion capital post World War II when New York’s garment district became a vanguard of a different type.      There were designers in New York who challenged the Parisian couture by introducing sportswear into the high fashion world in the 194 0s and 1950s.
