Is Republic Day at Odds With the 'New Modern India'?

69 years, and don't you think that's enough time for us to let go of the past and adopt OUR OWN sense of identity and do you even know what that what - Declaration of Indian Independence (Purna Swaraj) was proclaimed by the Indian National Congress as opposed to the Dominionstatus offered by British Regime?

While India had achieved independence from British Raj on 15 August 1947 following the Indian independence movement noted for largely peaceful non-violent resistance and civil disobedience led by Mahatma Gandhi.

The country, though, did not yet have a permanent constitution; instead its laws were based on the modified colonial Government of India Act 1935.

There were celebrations from 10 heads from Thailand, Vietnam, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Myanmar, Cambodia, Laos, and Brunei - as chief guests.

This celebration had participants not only from the Indian Army, Air Force, Navy, but it will also showcase over 700 students across the guest countries performing at the event.

And for the first time, a newly formed all-woman biker’s contingent of the Border Security Force (BSF) will make its debut on Rajpath on Republic Day.

26th January 1950, our Bharat became a full-fledged Republic.

And yet as we usher into a new year, full of bright hope and aspirations,

It is the word of late Mr. Sadanand A. Shetty, an industrialist – founder of One India One People Foundation (OIOP) a not-for-profit organisation that really strikes hard:

Who Am I

Am I a Hindu first or am I an Indian first?
Am I a Muslim first or am I an Indian first?
Am I a Christain first or am I an Indian first?Am  I a Buddhist firstor an Indian first?
Am I a Brahmin first or an Indian first?
Am I a Dalit first or an Indian first?
Am I a South Indian first or an Indian first?
Am I a Noth Indian firth or an Indian first?
Am I the President of India first or an Indian first?
Am I the Prime Minister of India first or an Indian first ?
Am I a commander in chief firstor an Indian first?
Am I a white-collar/blue-collar worker first or am Indian first?  a
Am I a youth/senior citizen first or an Indian first?

However, what could it have been like back then in 1950 – during the first republic day parade of India – the first anniversary of the Indian Republic?

When a huge concourse of people witnessed the Presidenstial ceremonial drive along Kingsway.

It was a day of rejoicing and thanksgiving. It is very interesting to note that More than 100 aircraft from the Indian Air Force flew past the parade. Harvards, Dakotas, Liberators, Tempests, Spitfires and jet planes participated in the fly past.

Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru addressed the nation on the radio on the eve of the first Republic Day.The then Indonesian President Sukarno was the first chief guest at the Republic Day parade in 1950.

The lion head from Ashoka Pillar in Sarnath was formally adopted as the national emblem on the same day.The peacock was declared as the national bird on this day in 1963.

Republic Day honours the date on which the Constitution of India came into effect on 26 January 1950 replacing the Government of India Act (1935) as the governing document of India.

The Constitution was adopted by the Indian Constituent Assembly on 26 November 1949, and came into effect on 26 January 1950 with a democratic government system, completing the country's transition towards becoming an independent republic.

Who is the writer?

On 29 August 1947, the Constituent Assembly set up a Drafting Committee under the Chairmanship of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar to prepare a draft Constitution for India.

India got independence from British rule in 1947, but was not a republic till 1951, until when the constitution of the country was adopted and the country was declared a Republic.  It was only when India adopted its newly written constitution on 26th January 1950 that India became a Republic.Aug 28, 2015

However, it’s easy to mistaken independence and Republic Day?

Karina Pandya in Conversation with Co-Founder of the Banyan, Dr. Vandana Gopikumar

An incident of coming across a homeless and mentally ill woman in distress on the road in front of her college in Chennai paved the route for Vandana Gopikumar to establish one of the leading NGOs in the field of mental health – The Banyan. While she was yet a Master’s student of Social Work, Vandana along with a close friend Vaishnavi Jayakumar encountered several other incidents of not being able to find the right shelter and mental institution for a woman in need of medical and psychiatric attention.     The Banyan, which was established in 1993 has been a one-stop destination to not only rescue, and rehabilitate but also treat mentally ill women from low-income groups. Vandana Gopikumar has pioneered a movement, helping thousands of individuals not only reintegrate into society but also secure long-term medical treatment.    Not only is she the co-founder of the NGO – The Banyan, but is also the co-founder of The Banyan Academy of Leadership (BALM). She is also a member of the advi

NGO Meet Becomes a Fulcrum of Mutual Help

“There is no better way to thank God for your sight than by giving a helping hand to someone in the dark.”  --Helen Keller   There are numerous social causes which would remain otherwise ignored if it were not for the Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs) contributing to the cause. January 6th, Saturday saw the coming together of 25-30 NGOs to provide a single platform for mutual help and support. It was organised by the founder trustee of Karmayog – Vinay Somani to discuss strategic planning for social and civic causes.          A Buffet of Purposes: Maybe You're Lost, Maybe You Aren’t. Maybe You’re Meandering with Meaning     Whether it is raising funds, strategy planning, content writing, or volunteering; there are numerous ways by which people can contribute to the welfare of an NGO.    Dr Dhyanraj Patkar, whose Narmada Kidney Foundation works to create awareness about kidney disease said that 6100 people were on the wait list for a kidney transplant in 2023 in Maharashtra bu

A Boutique Passport to New York

New York, the city that NEVER sleeps is one of the most sought-after hotspots for fashionistas across the world.     With astonishingly tall buildings which rise up to a couple of thousand feet in the air, creating a beautiful New York Skyline, New York is home to some of the most popular brands across the world such as Macy’s, Louis Vuitton, Prada, Burberry, Valentino, Kate Spade, Fendi, Coach, Marc Jacobs, Calvin Klein, Huckberry, Nordstrom NYC and many others there are plenty of innovative retailers and retail trends to choose from. However, New York has not always been the fashion capital of the world.  Paris, Milan and London have always been known worldwide for the most influential fashion trend. New only emerged as a fashion capital post World War II when New York’s garment district became a vanguard of a different type.      There were designers in New York who challenged the Parisian couture by introducing sportswear into the high fashion world in the 194 0s and 1950s.
