While India had achieved independence from British Raj on 15 August 1947 following the Indian independence movement noted for largely peaceful non-violent resistance and civil disobedience led by Mahatma Gandhi.
The country, though, did not yet have a permanent constitution; instead its laws were based on the modified colonial Government of India Act 1935.
There were celebrations from 10 heads from Thailand, Vietnam, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Myanmar, Cambodia, Laos, and Brunei - as chief guests.
This celebration had participants not only from the Indian Army, Air Force, Navy, but it will also showcase over 700 students across the guest countries performing at the event.
And for the first time, a newly formed all-woman biker’s contingent of the Border Security Force (BSF) will make its debut on Rajpath on Republic Day.

Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru addressed the nation on the radio on the eve of the first Republic Day.The then Indonesian President Sukarno was the first chief guest at the Republic Day parade in 1950.
The lion head from Ashoka Pillar in Sarnath was formally adopted as the national emblem on the same day.The peacock was declared as the national bird on this day in 1963.
Republic Day honours the date on which the Constitution of India came into effect on 26 January 1950 replacing the Government of India Act (1935) as the governing document of India.
