The Nun- The Final Nail in the Conjuring series’ coffin

So, if you're a movie buff and catching up on all the new movies in town, I’m sure you must have heard of the gothic, supernatural horror film –The Nun that was recently released on September 7th, 2018.  A Warner Bros film, it has also been dubbed in other regional languages such as Hindi, Tamil and Telegu.

The story took place in Romania, which is known for having vampiric qualities. There were old, stoic buildings that were used and a constant gloomy atmosphere in the area.   Due to the nature of the film, the crew-members also requested the Eastern Orthodox Priest to bless the set.

Even Dread Central (Dread Central is an American website founded in 2006 that is dedicated to horror news, interviews, and reviews.) had asked the cinematographer Maxime Alexandre whether the production’s location affects how he shoots a film; to which he responded: “Yes it does... this is a very important point of cinematography, except if it’s a real creative intention. I feel that it’s wrong to detach the photography from the rest of the storytelling. A movie is successful when the audience has been transported into a story. I believe that if an audience appreciates a single art and not the movie by itself, the effort would be wasted.”

The Nun hit theaters nationwide last Friday and the buzz surrounding the latest spinoff in The Conjuring universe is still white hot.

Synopsis:
When a young nun at a cloistered abbey in Romania takes her own life, a priest with a haunted past and novitiate on the threshold of her final vows are sent by the Vatican to investigate. Together, they uncover the order’s unholy secret. Risking not only their lives but their faith and their very souls, they confront a malevolent force in the form of a demonic nun.

Some Demonic & Spooky Facts!

1)The Movie was Shot at an Old Military Fort in Romania – The shooting of this film began in February 2017 and took 27 weeks to complete. Most of the scene shooting was conducted at an old military fort in Romania. The movie's shooting location was used as background for the location of investigating Valak's death.

2) It is adapted from a true story: The name Valak may be adopted from mythology but the character of Valak depicted in the movie is not the Valak in the form of a child with wings riding a horse. Instead the character of Valak in the Conjuring was changed to become a ghost. This was inspired from the story of the paranormal  Lorraine Warren who had been haunted by a ghost in a veil.

3) It is Definitely Controversial: Just the depiction of Valak in a nun’s dress has brought about a lot of criticism and controversy, particularly from the Catholic Church in the United States. For them, them deemed that nuns should be depicted as ghosts.

4) The History of Valak’s death: The nun explores the story of a young girl named Irene who was sent by the Vatican Church to Romania. She was sent here to investigate the suicide of a particular nun – which happened under mysterious circumstances, many years ago. Through this process, Irene began to witness ghotly figures of this nun since she was a child and she began her investigation accompanied by a priest.

5) The Story uses classical horro theme: The film which is set in 1952 is designed as real as possible so as to depict how life was in Romania during those times. The Directory – Colin Hardy himself said the cinematography itself uses classical horror style.

6) A Name can Make a Huge Impact! Initially the the nun had been titled ‘Story of Valak’ but James Wan (Producer) did not think that it was appealing and decided to change it to a shorter title – that sounds mysterious and thus they chose The Nun!

7) A mysterious “handprint” in the dust on one of the sets at Corvin Castle was discovered by Hardy

8) There was a makeup department head -Eleanor Sabaduquia who worked along with James Wan to create the look of the demon Valak / Nun.

The makeup was hand painted – using a simple, single prosthetic appliance to cover the eye brows – so no two applications were identical.

9)  The entire production was blessed by an Eastern Orthodox priest, Father Cosmin, at Castle Corvin.

10) Valak – the evil nun is actually a a small boy with angel wings. He is one of the 72 demons in the ‘Lesser Key of Solomon’ a spell    book on demonology. It was compiled as early as the 17th century.
