Is Choosing Love That Easy? - Review of interactive romantic comedy film - 'Choose Love' on Netflix

After having experimented with the interactive technique in Black Mirror Bandersnatch, Cat Burglar and Puss in Boots; Chose Love is the first interactive rom-con released on Netflix. In this format, viewers get to decide the ending.

Having a dream job as a recording engineer, a steady boyfriend and a promising future is something any girl could possibly want and that’s exactly what Cami – the protagonist of our film has. However, when confronted with her long-term boyfriend from high school (her first love) and a famous rock n roll star who could help boost her career, Cami is absolutely confused. Living a cosy life in Los Angeles with her sister Amalia (Meghan Smart), brother-in-law and niece.

Directed by Australian director and writer – Stuart McDonald is known for directing films such as Stranded and Oddball. There are at least 15 unique endings amongst the three eligible bachelors!

The film starts on a note when Cami Conway feels that her life is unfulfilled so she visits a psychic (Jacque Drew), who informs her that there may be two more suitors who may soon enter the picture. Although she is quite content with her long-term steady and handsome boyfriend, she assumes that he will propose to her which forces her to reassess her life and also take a break from her relationship with Paul (as played by Scott Michael Foster). Her relationship with Paul begins to waver and she starts to have doubts.

Being a very indecisive woman in her twenties, Cami easily is captivated by the charm of her first love – Jack Menna (as played by Jordi Webber) who is currently an activist who is dedicated to children’s issues.

Reminiscent memories of their past begin to reignite. He was the one who after all ‘got away!’

As if this was not bad enough, Rex Galier (as played by Avan Jogia) is an exciting British rock star who Cami is extremely attracted to and who may also be able to boost her career.

However, Paul has been her boyfriend for three years. He is a loyal boyfriend and is a corporate lawyer. So, as a viewer in this interactive romcom, you can actually control what happens. Unlike other movies, Cami’s fate is ultimately in your hands and there are a bunch is possible storylines and multiple endings.

Is Cami facing FOMO (Fear of Missing Out) or is she facing a fear of commitment? How appealing is the interactive genre when it comes to movies like ‘Choose Love’ and does it really work?

Although it is nice to be imaginative, the endless options of how the movie may end can be a bit overwhelming. After analysing the three personalities of the boys, it is predictable that Paul is the boy whom Cami ends up with.

At the same, the movie is a great watch and unfolds like a Hallmark film. There are a few drawbacks at the same time such as the chemistry between Cami and Paul and the emotional depth of the film.

Who do you think Cami will end up with and why? How does this interactive rom-com appeal to you?

Karina Pandya in Conversation with Co-Founder of the Banyan, Dr. Vandana Gopikumar

An incident of coming across a homeless and mentally ill woman in distress on the road in front of her college in Chennai paved the route for Vandana Gopikumar to establish one of the leading NGOs in the field of mental health – The Banyan. Vandana Gopikumar has pioneered a movement, helping thousands of individuals not only reintegrate into society but also secure long-term medical treatment.    Not only is she the co-founder of the NGO – The Banyan, but is also the co-founder of The Banyan Academy of Leadership (BALM). 4 Mindfully Spent Days At Woods At Sasan for a Writing Retreat with Bhavna Kher

Writing has been my passion for over 18 years so when I heard about the Writing Retreat that screenwriter, brand consultant and former creative director of Ogilvy - Bhavna Kher was going to conduct I was immediately interested in attending the same.     Not only this but I also wanted to connect with other writers and also sharpen my writing skills as well. It was a perfect opportunity to find inspiration within a focused environment.  Moreover, the 4-day writing retreat, (September 14- September 18th) which was conducted at a luxury boutique resort provided the perfect break from city life, and mindfully focused on sharpening one’s writing skills.  Having our independent quarters, we were surrounded by thickets of trees, within a lush mango orchard on the fringes of the Sasan Gir forest. It was the perfect place to calmly create a story without any disturbances. Moreover, in between the writing exercises, we went for a safari, and eco-trail, and were given besp...
