French Thriller 'Under Paris' becomes one of Netflix's most-watched movies ever!

Patrolling the waters for over 400 million years, sharks can rouse fear and awe like no other creature in the sea. Right from bull sharks, great white sharks, tiger sharks to shortfin Mako sharks there are many different types of sharks based on their sizes. Being one of the top Netflix’s top 10 movies, Under Paris (Sous le Seine), this film has been directed by French film director, Xavier Gens who is known for his films such as Budapest, Farang, The Crucifixion and Cold Skin.

This ‘seine-sensational’ film has been written by Yannick Dahan, Xavier Gens, Maud Heywang and Yaël Langmann under the production house ‘Let Me Be’. It was released on Netflix on June 5th,2024 on a budget of € 19.6 million.

Starring Bérénice Bejo (French-Argentine actressas a marine biologist – Sophia Assalas does a brilliant job at her role as she is not only seen as a sincere biologist but her acting skills are very plausible. The film opens up with Sophia and her team (including her husband Chris) searching for Lilith – a tagged shortfin mako shark near the Great Pacific Garbage patch, ultimately leading to the death of Chris and the other team members - Sam, Juan and Tom

Three years later, Sophia is working at an aquarium in Paris and is informed by an environmentalist – Mika that Lilith’s tracking beacon is still active and has travelled from the Pacific Ocean to the River Seine. Teaming up with police diver Adil and his team team Caro, Adama, Angèle and Markus, she tries to find and kill the shark, only to realise that the sharks are mutating at an alarming rate!

Besides this, the Mayor of Paris ((Anne Marivin) is too arrogant to call off the Seine triathlon as it focuses global attention on Paris during the Olympic Games which billions of euros have already been spent on. As the highly public event takes off and the swimmers dive in for their swim, the ravenous sharks create a bloodbath, creating a lot of panic and terror among the crowd.

In an attempt to kill Lilith, gunfires and explosions at the bottom of the river create shifts destroying several bridges and flooding the centre of Paris, throwing in not only the Mayor but many spectators.

If you are a fan of shark movies this movie should be on your list!

Karina Pandya in Conversation with Co-Founder of the Banyan, Dr. Vandana Gopikumar

An incident of coming across a homeless and mentally ill woman in distress on the road in front of her college in Chennai paved the route for Vandana Gopikumar to establish one of the leading NGOs in the field of mental health – The Banyan. While she was yet a Master’s student of Social Work, Vandana along with a close friend Vaishnavi Jayakumar encountered several other incidents of not being able to find the right shelter and mental institution for a woman in need of medical and psychiatric attention.     The Banyan, which was established in 1993 has been a one-stop destination to not only rescue, and rehabilitate but also treat mentally ill women from low-income groups. Vandana Gopikumar has pioneered a movement, helping thousands of individuals not only reintegrate into society but also secure long-term medical treatment.    Not only is she the co-founder of the NGO – The Banyan, but is also the co-founder of The Banyan Academy of Leadership (BALM). Writing has been my passion for over 18 years so when I heard about the Writing Retreat that screenwriter, brand consultant and former creative director of Ogilvy - Bhavna Kher was going to conduct I was immediately interested in attending the same.     Not only this but I also wanted to connect with other writers and also sharpen my writing skills as well. It was a perfect opportunity to find inspiration within a focused environment.  Moreover, the 4-day writing retreat, (September 14- September 18th) which was conducted at a luxury boutique resort provided the perfect break from city life, and mindfully focused on sharpening one’s writing skills.  Having our independent quarters, we were surrounded by thickets of trees, within a lush mango orchard on the fringes of the Sasan Gir forest. It was the perfect place to calmly create a story without any disturbances. Moreover, in between the writing exercises, we went for a safari, and eco-trail, and were given besp...
