Karina gets candid with Kumar Shubham – General Manager of Pema Wellness

1)    What vision did you have when you started Pema Wellness?

“Pema’s Promoter had the vision to create a difference in curated wellness and hence Pema was created with a vision to offer a wellness sanctuary with more focus on results with an extremely focused and curated program catering to the individual needs of more discerning guest”.

2)    What made you start this

We saw a gap in Curated wellness and leisure wellness in India and realised there is a huge gap where guests wanted to take a break from their lives to reset their health and do away with medical worries.

3)    What are the challenges you faced

Creating any new concept comes with a plethora of challenges and Pema was no different. The Project was on the verge of being complete in 2013 and then a natural disaster, the biggest that Andhra Pradesh has ever seen struck. A hurricane named Hud-Hud hit Vizaga with a wind spend of upwards of 200 KMPH and stayed over Vizag for 10 hours disrupting the entire city. The city lost electricity and it took almost a month to restore full power. Pema also lost 50% of the work and material during this time and the project was delayed by 3 years. However, the Promoters were extremely focused and worked very hard to open the project in 2016

4)    How do you see Pema 10 years from now?

We envision that PEMA will be in a very unique position in 10 years. We already have a repeat guest ratio of over 50% and we wish to reach an 80% repeat ratio for guests. Our vision is to make Pema a centre where guests can come not only for detox and rejuvenation but a place where they can heal in all aspects of body, mind & Soul.

5)    When you look back on Pema’s journey what feeling do you get

We get filled with pride, enthusiasm and a feeling of satisfaction as we have had so many cases with symptoms like hyperthyroidism and hypertension that were reversed to a great extent and we were able to bring a drastic change in the lifestyle of so many guests where they are living much better now.

6)    What are some client’s experiences?

Our testimonials on the website and social media speak highly about our guest’s experience. They all like the curated multiple programs and the feeling of the space which is not a hospital but rather a sanctuary, a place that calms you down with its architecture and positivity. The curated program gives a person so much clarity about what lifestyle they need to follow and this is the game changer.

7)    There are a lot of industrialists and stars who visit Pema. Can you name some?

Pema works on a concept of close group and reference-based approach and due to this exclusivity, lots of big industrialists in the millionaire and billionaire families visit Pema often. Celebrities like Chiranjeevi, Jaggapti Babu and several Bollywood and Hollywood stars are regular visitors at Pema. James Bond Girl Naiomi Harris came to Pema not just to have general detox but people detox as well which understandably is meaningful when you work in a people-centric industry.

Karina Pandya in Conversation with Co-Founder of the Banyan, Dr. Vandana Gopikumar

An incident of coming across a homeless and mentally ill woman in distress on the road in front of her college in Chennai paved the route for Vandana Gopikumar to establish one of the leading NGOs in the field of mental health – The Banyan. While she was yet a Master’s student of Social Work, Vandana along with a close friend Vaishnavi Jayakumar encountered several other incidents of not being able to find the right shelter and mental institution for a woman in need of medical and psychiatric attention.     The Banyan, which was established in 1993 has been a one-stop destination to not only rescue, and rehabilitate but also treat mentally ill women from low-income groups. Vandana Gopikumar has pioneered a movement, helping thousands of individuals not only reintegrate into society but also secure long-term medical treatment.    Not only is she the co-founder of the NGO – The Banyan, but is also the co-founder of The Banyan Academy of Leadership (BALM). 4 Mindfully Spent Days At Woods At Sasan for a Writing Retreat with Bhavna Kher

Writing has been my passion for over 18 years so when I heard about the Writing Retreat that screenwriter, brand consultant and former creative director of Ogilvy - Bhavna Kher was going to conduct I was immediately interested in attending the same.     Not only this but I also wanted to connect with other writers and also sharpen my writing skills as well. It was a perfect opportunity to find inspiration within a focused environment.  Moreover, the 4-day writing retreat, (September 14- September 18th) which was conducted at a luxury boutique resort provided the perfect break from city life, and mindfully focused on sharpening one’s writing skills.  Having our independent quarters, we were surrounded by thickets of trees, within a lush mango orchard on the fringes of the Sasan Gir forest. It was the perfect place to calmly create a story without any disturbances. Moreover, in between the writing exercises, we went for a safari, and eco-trail, and were given bespoke Ayurvedic, Yoga and
