Thirty-Nine and Fine: Mini's Birthday Bash

Mini was a cat who had seen it all. A sleek and graceful calico with a taste of elegance, she had a regal air about her and always carried herself with quiet dignity. She had a spark of adventure and a touch of mystery, all with a lot of sass. She just couldn't believe it as she stretched on the cosy rug in her apartment – in the sunlit living room; she was turning 39 today, a dream only few cats had!

However, she refused to spend this birthday alone. She had three wonderful friends – Bunty, Babli and Prince Goldie- with whom she could share her day. These felines had been by her side through thick and thin, and they were invited to come over to celebrate with her. The first one to arrive was Bunty – a lively black and white cat who resembled Hitler. She loved to talk about anything and everything. There was a constant twinkle in her eyes; she was always on the lookout for something new to explore. She had an infectious energy, and wherever she went, fun just followed. With her, she brought a large, colourful bag of catnip-filled treats and a boisterous Happy Birthday Mini.

Next came Babli, a sleek and pretty cat which resembled Charlie Chaplin. However, she carried with her a sense of humour that would catch anyone off guard, and she loved nothing more than to surprise her friends with witty one liners. She brought a delicate silver platter of fancy fish pate and a box of tiny tuna cakes, which were absolutely perfect for the occasion.

Mini, darling 39, never looked so good, Babli purred as she placed the platter down gently. However, we must indulge immediately for what lies before our sweet eyes. Only the best for our queen.

The final guest was Prince Goldie, of course – a golden tabby who, despite his royal name, was a laid-back fellow who spent most of his days napping in the sun or lounging by the window. He was especially known for his generous heart and his soft, luxurious fur. He wasn’t one for loud celebrations, but he always brought a sense of calmness to any gathering. He arrived with a beautiful bouquet– lilies and daises – Mini’s favourite.

Mini, my darling Prince Goldie softly purred – these are for YOU, his deep voice rich with affection. Happy 39th!  May this year bring you nothing but peace and TUNA!

He laid the flowers down on the table with a reverence befitting royalty.

Next, all four friends settled into Mini’s cosy living room, bringing their unique flair to the party. Bunty immediately started sharing her latest escapades, while Babli offered witty remarks and stories about her latest shopping trip. Prince Goldie simply listened, nodding his head in a very serene manner, which was very grounding.  As they all nibbled on their treats and sipped bowls of chilled water, Mini felt an overwhelming sense of happiness. She had the perfect balance in life: adventure, elegance, laughter and peace. All of this was wrapped up within these three friends of hers.

After a while, it was time for the birthday cake. Babli had gone above her capacity and created a beautiful cake made of fresh tuna with a touch of whipped cream for Mini. It was also decorated with tiny sprigs of catnip sprinkled across the cake.

Everyone sang the most off-key version of Happy Birthday that you could imagine, but Mini thoroughly enjoyed it all! That’s actually what made it so perfect!

Despite her age, Mini just couldn’t stop smiling as she looked around at her friends. “You know, I never thought I would make it to this landmark of 39, but here I am!”

I have realised something very important. “What’s that?” Babli chimed in.

Looking at each one of her friends, Mini purred,” It’s not how old which matters. It’s about whom I have spent my life with, and that is you guys! You make me feel so special!”

They all nodded in agreement, realising that it was not about the number of candles on the cake which mattered. It was the number of people (cats in this case) who were there!

Pretty soon, the sun started to set. All four felines snuggled together, nibbling on the pieces of cake in front of them. Soft music could be heard in the background, and Prince Goldie’s rumbling tummy!

The celebration continued into the night, and there was even more laughter, fun and stories. Only their true friendship is what brought life to this party, and Mini was so grateful for that!

Writing has been my passion for over 18 years so when I heard about the Writing Retreat that screenwriter, brand consultant and former creative director of Ogilvy - Bhavna Kher was going to conduct I was immediately interested in attending the same.     Not only this but I also wanted to connect with other writers and also sharpen my writing skills as well. It was a perfect opportunity to find inspiration within a focused environment.  Moreover, the 4-day writing retreat, (September 14- September 18th) which was conducted at a luxury boutique resort provided the perfect break from city life, and mindfully focused on sharpening one’s writing skills.  Having our independent quarters, we were surrounded by thickets of trees, within a lush mango orchard on the fringes of the Sasan Gir forest. It was the perfect place to calmly create a story without any disturbances. Moreover, in between the writing exercises, we went for a safari, and eco-trail, and were given besp...

Exploring Sifar: A Tale of War and Humanity

A play produced by Shabd Theatre Group, Sifar is a Hindi play written and directed by  Sachin Malvi, which is based on the Syrian war. It recently made its debut at NCPA theatre on 1st December 2024.    The play takes place in Damascus (the capital of Syria) and depicts all these characters adapting to chaos and demonstrating resilience.  Taking place in Damascus adds a layer of authenticity to the story as this  city has witnessed immense  destruction.   The play portrays the struggles of different individuals who are trying to rebuild their lives amidst the ongoing devastation. Named after an Arabic word that means zero or nothingness, the title symbolises the hollow emptiness left after the war while also representing hope for new beginnings.    Many overlapping stories of different people’s lives blend poetic scenes and theoretical storytelling. The play showcases the indomitable human spirit and emphasises dreams, love,...
