Turning Points That Changed the Game for India

Held every two years, the ICC Men's T20 World Cup, India has the highest victory percentage in T20 World Cups. Having won the Men's T20 World Cup three times, India is the most successful team, with victories in the inaugural tournament in 2007, and recently in 2024 and yesterday (2026), the latter two being consecutive wins, a first in T20 World Cup history. They also finished as runners-up in 2014.

The 2026 victory made history as India became the first team to win T20 World Cups consecutively. With depth in bowling and batting, India was able to handle high-pressure knockouts and brilliant wickets. This victory has even cemented India as one of the greatest teams in the history of the tournament.

Filled with exciting moments, there were also a few moments which stood out in yesterday’s match in favour of India’s victory. This match between the Indian national cricket team and the New Zealand national cricket team displayed how momentum in T20 cricket could change very quickly.

The first brilliant power move was with India’s brilliant batsmanship. Having an aggressive powerplay, India sped forward right from the very beginning, putting immediate pressure on the New Zealand bowlers. Having gained a considerable score in the batting, India forced New Zealand to alter their bowling plans. It was this fast start which allowed India to build its strong platform for the remaining innings.

By the end of all the innings, India scored a huge total. With a strong contribution from the top and middle order, India scored remarkably at 255/5.

Jasprit Bumrah then came in with accurate bowling and the ability to take early wickets slowly. He was able to eliminate early batsmen and break the rhythm of their batting line-up, which, of course, increased the pressure on the remaining players.

Some of the other hallmarks of the game were Samson & Abhishek’s explosive powerplay and New Zealand’s middle-order collapse.

All these turning moments played a crucial role in shaping the final result of the match. India maintained strong control from the very beginning with its aggressive batting and disciplined bowling, never allowing New Zealand to regain momentum.

The explosive powerplay, the massive total on the scoreboard, and the early breakthroughs with the ball together shifted the game completely in India’s favour. These decisive moments ultimately helped India secure a historic victory and achieve the remarkable milestone of winning consecutive T20 World Cups, further strengthening its legacy in the tournament.

As I watched the last 30 minutes of the game, I was totally blown away by the wickets India got of New Zealand and the skill with which they were playing. It was truly a match to remember! Jasprit Bumrah was also awarded the Player of the Match for his four-wicket haul in the game. New Zealand quietly accepted defeat with 159.

The T20 World Cup 2026 win at the Narendra Modi Stadium brought out raw emotions in MS Dhoni, Virat Kohli, and Shubman Gill, as the trio were among the first to congratulate India on the tournament win.  India's World Cup win also prompted reactions from across the border as several Pakistan greats, such as Shahid Afridi, Mohammad Amir, and Shoaib Akhtar, congratulated India for absolutely annihilating New Zealand in the final.
