Tewari Brothers: Charni Road – A Sweet Shop in the Heart of Mumbai

Tucked away in the bustling lanes of Charni Road, Tewari Brothers stands as a beloved destination for Indian sweets and savoury delights. Nestled amidst heritage buildings and vibrant local markets, and located close to the iconic Girgaum Chowpatty, this sweet shop captures the essence of old-world Mumbai charm.

I visited this outlet yesterday, just before heading to watch the iconic play Sitan Banbas, and it felt like stepping into a slice of the city’s culinary history.

Originating as a humble family-run business, Tewari Brothers has been serving traditional Indian sweets and delicacies for decades. Known for its commitment to freshness and authenticity, the shop offers a wide range of mithai and classic North Indian snacks, all prepared in a pure vegetarian setting.

Some of its standout offerings include the indulgent paneer jalebi, the tangy and flavourful khatta kachori, the rich motichoor ladoo, and the soft, syrupy rasgulla—each item reflecting time-honoured recipes and craftsmanship.

More than just a sweet shop, Tewari Brothers is a nostalgic landmark and an integral part of Mumbai’s culinary heritage. Established by a North Indian family who migrated to the city in search of better opportunities, the legacy has been lovingly preserved and passed down through generations. Today, it continues to delight loyal patrons and new visitors alike, standing as a testament to tradition, resilience, and the timeless appeal of Indian sweets.

This legendary outlet offers many varieties of authentic sweets, chat and street food items that one can get at a reasonable price. Many of the sweets that are made here are made using old-school methods (frying jalebis in iron kadhais and hand-shaped ladoos). This helps to preserve the authentic textures and flavours that you don’t always get in modern set-ups. During festivals such as Diwali and Ganesh Chaturthi, the shop quietly becomes a major supplier of sweets for local families. At Tewari Brothers, hot items such as kachoris and jalebis can vanish within minutes. So, regulars don’t waste their time browsing – they strategically time their visits! This place resembles a live street food theatre.
