When Poetry finds Music: Why Priya Malik and Tanmay Maheshwari’s performances feel so Human

Some performances are loud and demand applause, and then there are performances that quietly pull you in — soulful, immersive, and almost magical. That is exactly what happens when Priya Malik and Tanmay Maheshwari perform together. Always accompanying Priya’s live poetry performances, Tanmay’s music feels deeply harmonious with her words. Their collaboration often feels like poetry being sung and music being spoken. Priya’s poetry explores heartbreak, longing, love, old Bollywood nostalgia, and emotional storytelling — themes that blend seamlessly with Tanmay’s soft, melodic compositions. What makes Priya Malik’s performances stand apart is that, instead of creating conventional singles or stage acts, she and Tanmay create emotional live experiences where poetry and music flow effortlessly into one another. I experienced this first hand during Dard-E-Dil – A Trial Show at the National Centre for the Performing Arts, where I witnessed both Priya Malik’s poetry and Tanmay Maheshwari’s music come alive on stage. As Gulzar once famously said, “Dil hai toh phir dard hoga, dard hai toh dil bhi hoga.” (If there is a heart, there will be pain; and if there is pain, there must also be a heart.) Among their most recognisable collaborations is the Ishq Hai series. Priya’s poetry gives language to emotions many people struggle to express, while Tanmay’s music gives those emotions a pulse. Attending one of their live sessions feels less like watching a performance and more like being transported into an intimate emotional landscape. Audiences connect instantly with their work because people today are emotionally exhausted and constantly searching for something honest. In a world driven by noise and fast-paced content, their performances feel deeply human. There is a beautiful unpredictability in the way spoken word and acoustic music merge together on stage. Their performances feel less like content and more like shared emotional experiences. What makes their duet so powerful is its subtlety. The music never competes for attention; instead, it gently creates an atmosphere where the poetry can fully land. Tanmay’s soft guitar progressions leave room for silence, allowing the audience to sit with their emotions. His melodies enter quietly, almost instinctively, when the silence begins to feel heavy. Priya Malik’s poetry itself is intensely vulnerable. Whether she speaks about heartbreak, identity, longing, womanhood, memory, or healing, her words immediately sweep listeners into a whirlwind of emotions. Her style remains intimate and soothing — very different from many contemporary spoken-word performances that often feel louder, faster, or constantly demanding attention. Priya Malik and Tanmay Maheshwari’s performances are not just poetry shows, nor are they simply live music sessions. They are emotional experiences that allow audiences to reflect, reconnect, and resonate with their own feelings. That is what people ultimately carry home with them. Priya’s poetry hits harder because of Tanmay’s music, and Tanmay’s music feels deeper because of Priya’s words. Their performances are minimalist yet deeply immersive, making the audience feel like a part of the experience itself. Music has a unique way of deepening spoken word and emotional storytelling, and Tanmay Maheshwari’s quiet musical presence gives Priya Malik’s poetry an even greater emotional power.
