Project Hail Mary – Review

Exploring themes of sacrifice, friendship, resilience, and hope, Project Hail Mary delivers a visually engaging and emotionally grounded science fiction experience. Directed by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, and based on the novel by Andy Weir, the film blends high-stakes science with heartfelt storytelling.

Ryan Gosling gives a compelling performance as Ryland Grace, an astronaut who wakes up alone on an interstellar spacecraft with no memory, only to discover he must save Earth from a mysterious sun-consuming organism known as Astrophage. His journey is both intellectually challenging and emotionally resonant, especially as the story unfolds through a mix of present-day tension and flashbacks.

The film was shot in the United Kingdom.  Puppeteer James Ortiz voiced Rocky. Rocky was built and designed by the legendary Neal Scanian and his creature shop and is performed by puppeteering legend James Ortiz and his team.

The film stands out for its balance between complex scientific concepts and human connection. While some of the technical details may be difficult to follow, the emotional core—particularly the unexpected friendship Grace forms keeps the narrative grounded. The use of practical effects, including 3D-printed puppetry for Rocky, adds a unique and tangible charm to the film.

However, the heavy reliance on scientific exposition and shifting timelines may make it slightly challenging for casual viewers. Still, for fans of thoughtful science fiction, the film offers a rewarding experience.

Overall, Project Hail Mary is a visually impressive and emotionally engaging film that will appeal most to sci-fi enthusiasts, though it may feel dense for others.
